Since the keepers left in 1987, there has been no one living on Ledge Light to take care of it. The harsh environment of the sea, combining the relentless pounding of waves and salt spray has taken a toll on the lighthouse. Rain, snow, humidity, wind and sun have all added to the deterioration of the building. This gallery of pictures shows the poor condition of the lighthouse. The New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation is currently beginning surveys and analysis of the building to assess its condition and determine what needs to be done to stabilize it and prevent any further deterioration. We also plan to begin restoration so that we can create galleries, museum exhibits, and a small theater at Ledge Lighthouse.
